'CROSS THE POND is an oral history of Appalachians who served in the Vietnam Era military. Originally recorded in 1977, these recently discharged vets told the stories to each other. More than 40 veterans have their names and occupations included in the front of the book but none are with their stories. The original tapes were burned in a public ceremony to preserve privacy. An unsettling collection of smuggled, unlabelled color photos is included for those who dare peek at the realities of war.
"Each of these accounts adds to what we know about how Vietnam changed America and Americans." Marilyn B. Young, Ph.D., Professor of History, New York University .
